Off-iciating (MLSTalk Podcast)

This past week was an eventful week within the scope of American soccer. From an historic 1-0 USMNT victory at Estadio Azteca, to the plight of one Clint Dempsey, these events may only have been upstaged by a veritable smorgasbord of lackluster officiating. The DC United/Philadelphia clash was the clearcut leader in terms of poor quality, but in the eyes of many fans the situation in US Soccer is not isolated to single matches. Hosts Earl Reed and Robert Hay tackle these concepts, plus an appearance by Daniel Feuerstein to chime in with his views. He also gives some insight on the upcoming CCL fixtures.

Finally, Earl and Robert give a rundown of their league Top 10s. Please feel free to comment if you have any ideas, suggestions, or alternative viewpoints at http://www.majorleaguesoccertalk.com

Hey guys, just wanted to give you a heads up on a discussion point
regarding Dero’s penalty. I am a certified ref myself. The
amendment you were discussing is already the law of the game. If
the kicking team infringes into the penalty and the goal is scored,
it is retaken. If it is saved or missed, the play stands. If the
defending team infringes and it is scored, the play stands. If it
is saved or missed, it is retaken.

    • Earl Reed says:

Thanks Wayne…I think that was my understanding of the rule, but might not have come out that way…but thanks for clarifying. I don’t think this is an issue of the referee making the wrong call based on the Laws. I have much less of a problem of him calling a retake as I do with Geiger being too quick to caution a player who was wasting time early in the match. Seems to me that it made him hesitant to punish foul play later, and that led to the melees that occurred later. I am not a fan of saying a player is wasting time in the 1st half, especially when a referee can add time.

  2. Chris Webb says:

My problem with the retake is that in all honesty, it’s selective
enforcement of the rules. By rule, a retake is the correct call,
but you would have to retake most likely over 50% of the PK’s taken
worldwide. Just yesterday in Chelsea’s 4-2 win over Reading, the
first goal was a penalty scored by Lampard and you clearly see
Ivanovic infringing on the play, yet that goal stood. At the end of
the day though, had Salihi just been a bit more disciplined, this
    is a moot point.
