The Off Week (MLSTalk Podcast)

After an off week for the MLSTalk Podcast due to holiday and other circumstances, Robert Hay and Daniel Feuerstein convene to discuss all the relevant happenings in Major League Soccer from the past two weeks. The hot item seems not to be MLS Cup, which will happen in a few short days, but rather the certain and possible endings the Los Angeles v. Houston match-up could bring. There was lots of other news that came from Don Garber’s State of the League address, and we toss it all about for you in this episode.

RE: an MLS team in Las Vegas

It probably can’t happen. I grew up there (1972-1990.) Like a lot of residents then, most of my family was and is in the gaming industry. When I would ask if we would ever get a pro basketball or baseball team, I was always told it couldn’t happen. The reason: Because it’s a gambling town. If you can bet on a sport, you can’t have a professional franchise in that sport. They have minor league hockey and baseball. And UNLV- Whom we couldn’t bet on…though they could have beaten a pro team or two in the late 80′s. Anyway, that’s how I understand it. If you can bet on MLS; and I know you can; then you can’t have a franchise in Vegas. Too much Pete Rose potential.

Totally wrong. Don and the board of governors said gambling will have no bearing on whether Las Vegas gets a club. It’s up to the league.

And Pete Rose never made a single bet in Las Vegas when he was manager of the Reds.

As far as I know, Steward Ceus’s last name is pronounced “the-back-up-keeper-how-do-you-say-his-name”.
